chair advanced studio | spring 2022
aluminim, steel, nylon, foam

Designed and protyped “upholstered” chair, flat-packable in under five minutes, concieved as dwelling happily in AMO’s OFF-White Miami flagship “modern fulfillment center,” adaptable to its evolving shopping community center ecosystem and recognizable brand. Use of utilitarian materials is a prominent design feature, as is the contrast effect of straight lines with the frame’s grain (pictured above and below):

Painstakingly working an angle grinder to the aluminum sheets generated an opalescent, highly reflective finish (first experimented with on the “chair for meditation”). The more variety in the direction of the grinding strokes, the greater the dappling and reflectivity.

Early concept drawings and rendering (below) initialy imagined the addition of wood (ply) and clear tubing for the space, but time constraints (barely two weeks for the project) altered the plan in favor of metal, nylon strapping, and foam.
